'I totally blacked out': Rio Theatre helps bring dream marriage proposal to life and people are loving it

Like something out of a Hollywood rom-com, the Rio Theatre recently helped a local couple with an absolute dream wedding proposal.
On Wednesday morning, the Rio Theatre posted a picture on its Instagram with a slight change to its marquee.
Instead of its typical movie listings, the marquee had a simple message.
“Rebeka, will you marry me?”

Thankfully, the caption said “She said yes,” so it was a happy ending for the couple.
We got in touch with the proposee, Rebeka, who on her own social media described it as a “hell yeah dude kinda weekend.” We asked about how it all came together and what the experience was like. She definitely wasn’t expecting it.
“We were going to see the showing of Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma that evening at 5, and on Sunday I was going to be running the Squamish 50K, so I wasn’t thinking much else on Saturday,” she told Daily Hive.
Prior to the movie, she went for a run with one of her best friends and actually drove by the Rio on her way home. She looked at the marquees but was listening to a podcast about the movie Heat. She was so focused on the fact that they were playing Heat that afternoon that she didn’t even notice the other marquee.
“When we got there, we waited in line for the movie until we got close to where they take tickets. He pulled me out of the line and said, ‘Come here for a second,’ and I’m thinking, we gotta get our seats for this movie, what are you doing?”
She was overwhelmed and asked if he was “seriously doing this right now?”
He responded, “Should I not be?”
She then said, “Wait, what are you doing?”
He then pointed to the marquee, and she finally realized what was going on.
“I was shocked by it. He then proposed, which I totally blacked out on what he was saying, but I looked at him on one knee and said, ‘First of all, yes,’ and then went back to the marquee to process what was happening.”
Rebeka told Daily Hive that someone drove by and asked if she was Rebeka. She responded that she was, and the person driving by cheered and yelled congrats.
“After the fact, I learned that this was how he had been planning to do it from when he decided he was going to propose, but when we decided to see this movie, he got in contact with the theatre about doing it. My family knew, and some friends as well, and I had never said anything, but it was always how I thought he would do it. Regardless, I was still shocked when it actually happened.”
In response, the Rio Theatre’s Instagram post has over a thousand likes and lots of comments.
“The most perfect proposal ever omg congratulations,” one comment stated.
Someone else didn’t realize they wanted a proposal like this, saying, “The dream proposal that I didn’t even know I wanted.”
Another comment praised the Rio, saying, “Fabulous stories always at @riotheatre.”
“Congratulations, this is the cutest proposal ever,” someone else wrote.
