The City of Port Coquitlam will officially open the facility’s two of three new ice rinks and the new Terry Fox Library, as well as the Wilson Lounge, games room, multi-purpose rooms, and food services on Wednesday, August 28, with grand opening celebrations for this first phase slated the day before on Tuesday, August 27 from 4 to 7 pm.

The complex’s remaining phase one spaces, entailing a fitness centre, leisure swimming pool, and three-lane, 20-metre length swimming area, will open in early 2020.

In 2021, the second phase of the PCCC will open, consisting of a third ice rink, gymnasium, children’s area, more multi-purpose spaces, outdoor plazas, sport courts, and underground parking with 500 vehicle parking stalls.

The complex will replace existing, ageing facilities that no longer meet the demands of the growing community; the phased approach to opening and building the facility allows the community to be served by existing facilities throughout the construction period, which began in 2017.

PCCC, located at 150 Wilson Avenue, just south of Wilson Avenue between Mary Hill Road and Kingsway Avenue, is designed by Architecture 49 and built by Ventana.

“Excitement is building as we’re less than a week away to open our new community centre and we can’t wait for our residents to start using the much-needed services that we will be rolling out over the next few months,” said Port Coquitlam mayor Brad West in a statement.

“Our residents and nearby residents deserve a big thank-you for their patience and support so far.”

In order to realize the project, the municipal government tapped various funding sources, including $12.5 million from the federal government, $41.2 million from internal and reserve funds, and $52 million borrowed over a 30-year term.

Remaining funding is generated by a $25 per property parcel tax from 2017 to 2020, $7.3 million in facility levies from 2015 to 2019, and a $17-million sale of city-owned lands — including the former public works yard — for residential and commercial development.

Tuesday’s grand opening celebrations include a free community block party with live entertainment, fire rescue and police showcase, building tours, and activities for children and seniors.

There will also be a free BBQ, coffee and snacks, ice cream, and a free public ice skating between 5:30 and 7 pm, after the ribbon cutting and first ceremonial skate by the city council at 5 pm.

In another ice rink, from 6 to 7 pm, an exhibition ice hockey game will be held between members of the municipality’s fire rescue and RCMP detachment.
