An adult male is dead after a late-night shooting that took place in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood.

On Tuesday, just before midnight, police received multiple calls reporting shots heard in the area of 13900 72nd Avenue in Surrey.

When officers arrived, they found a lone male. He was injured and died on scene due to his injuries.

Immediately after the shooting, a vehicle fled the scene at high speeds.

40 minutes later, just after midnight, the RCMP received a report of a car on fire in the area of 164 Street and 92 Avenue.

It’s believed that the vehicle is related to the shooting.

RCMP and members of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) remained in the area until early this morning.

The man has yet to be identified and it hasn’t been revealed whether the incident was believed to be targeted or not.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has video footage is being asked to contact the RCMP at 604-599-0502.

Update: Police have identified the victim as 30-year-old Amrendra Vijay Kumar.

“We do not believe Kumar’s shooting was a random act and our detectives are working hard to determine motive,” says Corporal Frank Jang of IHIT.
