One person dead after vehicle hits light pole in crash near UBC

A man died after a vehicle crash at Blanca and West 16th Avenue on Monday night, near Pacific Spirit Regional Park and the University of British Columbia.

University RCMP told Daily Hive that at 9:11 p.m. on Jan. 12, they received a report of the crash, where the driver had “apparently suffered a medical event which led to the vehicle leaving the roadway and impacting a light pole.”

First responders intervened immediately, but he was “pronounced deceased at the scene.”

No one else was injured.

In 2024, ICBC reported 85 fatal crashes in the Lower Mainland, of which 27 were at intersections. There were nearly 83,000 intersection crashes in total.
