How distraction thieves are targeting the elderly in North Vancouver

Feb 9 2026, 11:16 pm

The North Vancouver RCMP is urging the public to “remain vigilant at all times” after a recent surge in distraction thefts has impacted many of the city’s elderly residents.

According to the detachment, there were three reported incidents in a 48-hour span on Friday, Feb. 6 and Saturday, Feb. 7.

In all three incidents, elderly victims were approached by two females and a male driving a grey SUV. The perpetrators asked for directions before stealing the victim’s jewellery.

There have been six reports of distraction thefts in North Vancouver since September 2025.

“Our investigators are working hard to identify the suspects,” said Corporal Mansoor Sahak, media relations officer for the North Vancouver RCMP, in a release.

“Victims have not only lost property, but family heirlooms that have significant memories attached to them.”

During the distraction thefts, the victim was engaged in a conversation where the suspect attempted to hug or touch the victim’s hand or wrist. This is so they can remove jewellery that the victim is wearing and replace it with counterfeit jewellery.

Other common tactics involve victims being asked for a favour or assistance, sometimes involving directions or prayers. Suspects may also approach a victim and pay them several compliments to overwhelm them.

“Behind every incident police are investigating is a person who may have been impacted,” added Corporal Sahak.

“We engage victims who may have been impacted by crime or trauma to Victim Services. This program is offered free of charge and is available to all North Vancouver residents.”

North Vancouver RCMP also reminded members of the public to be on the alert for any strangers in their personal space or people trying to hug or touch them.

“Trust your instincts and don’t be afraid to say no or yell for help if you feel uncomfortable,” added the RCMP. “Walk away from any suspicious person or behaviour.”

The incidents come just months after Vancouver saw a 122 per cent spike in similar crimes compared to November last year, targeting vulnerable residents in the city.
