A 44-year-old man was arrested at a home in North Vancouver late Sunday night, after a five-hour standoff with police.

According to North Vancouver RCMP, the incident began to unfold around 7 pm, in the 15oo block of Dovercourt Road, after neighbours reported seeing a man enter a home which had been extensively damaged in a fire on Friday. The home was deemed uninhabitable as a result.

When police arrived on scene, they discovered the man had barricaded himself inside the residence and told officers he wouldn’t leave the home and threatened to “shoot the police with a weapon he had in his possession.”

After “lengthy negotiations,” the man was arrested without incident around midnight and no one was hurt.

The suspect is reported to be the son of the homeowners, who were not in the home at the time.

He was taken into police custody and was scheduled to appear in court today in connection with the events.

The incident remains under investigation.
