What we know about the Colombian Navy ship that'll be near Vancouver this week

This week, a massive ship from the Colombian Navy will be in North Vancouver.

According to the City of North Vancouver, the ship will be docking at The Shipyards waterfront this week, starting tomorrow, where it will remain for a few days for public tours.

This isn’t the first time the ship has been in Vancouver waters, and here’s everything we know about it.

The country of Colombia refers to the ARC Gloria as its flagship vessel and calls it “a symbol of freedom and Colombia’s emblem in ports around the world.”

In 2024, the ship visited various ports around the United States and Europe. This week, after a stint in San Francisco, the ship will sail into North Vancouver.

The ARC Gloria, built in Spain, is a barque-type ship, a type of sailing ship characterized by having three or more masts. The ARC is incredibly long, at 212 feet. It travels at a speed of 10 knots. To put that speed into context, it’s significantly slower than something like this superyacht, which can travel at a maximum speed of 19 knots.

Sail Training International reports that the ship has 85 permanent crew members on board.

This October marked the 57th anniversary of the ARC Gloria, which sailed its maiden voyage in October 1968.

“In 46 years, the ARC Gloria has sailed about 808,759 nautical miles, equal to going around the world 117 times, and has acted as the Colombian Embassy in 183 ports in 72 countries, including England, Spain, Germany, Denmark, Morocco, New Zealand, Argentina, and the United States,” Colombia says.

The City of North Vancouver has shared some additional information about when you can visit the Navy ship when it’s docked at The Shipyards.
