YVR warns U.S.-bound travellers of delays as Nexus lanes remain closed

Travellers heading to the United States through Vancouver International Airport are asked to give themselves “additional time” as the NEXUS program, designed to speed up border crossings, continues to be unavailable.

YVR posted the alert on its website and on social media on Sunday, Feb. 22, stating that access to NEXUS and Global Entry pre-clearance programs for flights to U.S. destinations is suspended until further notice.

According to the airport, the suspension is due to the partial U.S. Government shutdown.

“This change may impact processing times for travellers departing for the U.S.,” said YVR in its notice.

“All travellers flying to U.S. destinations from YVR are encouraged to allow additional time to complete U.S. pre-clearance procedures.”

A phone call to customer service at Vancouver International Airport on Monday, Feb. 23, provided an update that verified traveller lanes are open.

However, YVR confirmed that NEXUS lanes have not reopened, and there is no timeline for when the suspension of the program will be lifted.

“NEXUS and Global Entry pre-clearance programs for U.S.-bound passengers through YVR continue to be unavailable,” YVR said in a statement to Daily Hive. “Travellers can continue to use NEXUS through CATSA security screening.

“Although there are currently no significant operational impacts, travellers flying to U.S. destinations may need to leave additional time during peak periods. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available on yvr.ca.”

Toronto Pearson International Airport and Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport reopened their NEXUS/Global Entry lanes at U.S. pre-clearance earlier on Monday, Feb. 23.

A notice posted on the Department of Homeland Security’s website last week stated that the lapse in federal funding would cause delays in updates being posted.
