80-metre-long "We Are One" mural brings colour to New Westminster (PHOTOS)
There is a new large colourful mural at the southeast corner of the intersection of Columbia Street and McKenzie Street in downtown New Westminster that honours the efforts of healthcare workers and celebrates community.
The three-sided mural, named “We Are One,” on the fenced-off vacant site of 638 Columbia Street, was commissioned by the Downtown New West Business Improvement Association (BIA).
Local artists Ela Maftei and Mihai Darvasa of MD Murals recently completed the art work, which incorporates painted images and surrounding block-lettered one-liners.

The Columbia Street frontage spells out “#togethernewwest” with a cityscape of the street in the background, while the Mackenzie Street frontage features a literal “Thank you!” to all essential workers. And along Front Street, the mural design features imagery that symbolizes COVID-19’s global impact and that community is not alone in the fight.

“We would like to thank the BIA for giving us the opportunity and the freedom to have our ideas become alive on a large scale,” saidĀ Mihai Darvasa.
“The community was very receptive to our message, very appreciative and we would also like to thank them for their support. This is the firstĀ muralĀ in our hometown and we are really excited to have a chance to paint in our community.”
The mural along all three sides of the property facing the streets has a total length of about 80 metres.
Up until recently, it was the site of the presentation centre for Bosa Development’s Pier West redevelopment, which is currently under construction immediately to the south.
