New Westminster Police unveils electronic traffic ticketing

The New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) has launched a new system for issuing traffic tickets.

Violations and infractions will now be written electronically.

“E-ticketing allows the details needed to issue a traffic ticket to be automatically filled with the swipe of a driver’s license,” says the NWPD in a media statement.

Tickets will then be printed from the police vehicle, while the information is shared directly with ICBC.

Drivers will also be able to pay for a ticket online.

“Thanks to the auto-fill feature this will result in less time pulled off to the side of the road with fewer administrative errors,” says Sergeant Greg Smith.

The NWPD Traffic Unit will begin issuing e-tickets this summer and will expand as more vehicles receive the e-ticketing technology.

It’s expected that over time, municipal police departments and RCMP will also transition to e-ticketing.
