This dreadfully long debacle might soon come to an end for the Vancouver Canucks.
Canucks Army’s Irfaan Gaffar broke the news yesterday that the Canucks are closing in on a deal to build a practice facility at Britannia in East Vancouver.
Smoke surrounding the Canucks finally getting a practice facility built at Britannia began to billow about two weeks ago.
Considering its proximity to Rogers Arena compared to other rumoured locations, such as South Burnaby or UBC, Britannia was always the most sensible destination.
Of course, it’s not across the finish line yet. If the deal falls through, it wouldn’t be the first time for the Canucks.
However, CHEK’s Rick Dhaliwal did reveal some new details about the Britannia-based practice facility, if the deal goes through.

“I heard there was a really big practice facility meeting earlier this week at Rogers Arena,” Dhaliwal said.
“Sounds like it’s gonna be a four or five-story building, most likely four, office space for the Canucks and for the City of Vancouver.”
Dhaliwal also mentioned that the facility would be around 20,000 to 25,000 square feet, and that the practice facility undertaking could cost over $30 million.
Daily Hive’s Kenneth Chan reported in January that the City of Vancouver was back in the planning stage for the Britannia Community Centre and surrounding amenities. However, construction would not start until the 2030s.
But, if potential funding from the Canucks comes into play, this theoretically could get across the finish line much quicker.
“Start to finish, if they started today, the project would take a year and a half,” Dhaliwal said.
“But I don’t know when it’s going to start.”
Not only would funding from the Canucks help get this practice facility done, but that’s how NHL teams typically get these construction projects off the ground.
That was the case with the NHL’s newest practice facility in Utah. Other teams like the Vegas Golden Knights, Seattle Kraken, and Chicago Blackhawks have also used money largely from their own organizations to get practice facilities built.
The Golden Knights recouped costs through naming rights, while the Kraken partnered with Starbucks in building their practice facility.
Because this practice facility news is in the infancy stage, no details on funding have been announced yet.
The $30-million project cost that Dhaliwal reported is on the lower end of what recent NHL practice facility construction costs have totalled. However, the Golden Knights’ practice facility did cost around an estimated US$25 million to US$30 million.
“The owner has his own construction people who can build it,” Dhaliwal reported. “I’ve heard the renderings look incredible.”
If this does get across the finish line, the Canucks will finally have a light at the end of the tunnel after falling behind the rest of the NHL.
“An agent told me this week about Utah,” Dhaliwal said. “Great ownership, great practice facility, they treat the players right.
“That’s what you want people to talk about when they talk about Vancouver.”
