Metro Vancouver cat lovers know how much we enjoy pampering our feline friends, and now we’ve got the crown to prove it.

PetSmart Charities of Canada has just revealed the top 10 cat-loving cities in the country ahead of National Adoption Week, and Langley is at the top of the list.

According to PetSmart, residents of the top 10 cities are adopting more cats and spoiling them with the highest purchases of cat toys, treats, and other products.

“We’ve been following this trend as cat adoptions outpace dog adoptions – and it’s fair to say cats are having a moment,” said Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities of Canada, in a release. “This index shows us that cat parenting is more universal than you might think, and those old stereotypes no longer apply.

“More people than ever are enjoying the playful nature of cat companionship. Cats can thrive in smaller living spaces, and their independence often makes them incredibly appealing to pet parents who can’t get out for regular walks.”

Langley landed in first place overall on the index that encompasses cat adoptions through PetSmart Charities of Canada and sales of cat pampering products bought at PetSmart Canada stores.

Two other B.C. cities also made the list, Nanaimo at number five and Victoria in the tenth spot. All of the other cities in the PetSmart cat-loving cities index are in Ontario.

Final rankings were set using a formula that took into account 50 per cent adoptions and 50 per cent product sales. Results were also adjusted for each city’s total number of PetSmart store locations and indexed against national performance.

PetSmart Charities of Canada National Adoption Week takes place from Monday, July 21, to Sunday, July 27. Metro Vancouver cat lovers looking to meet adoptable pets from local animal welfare organizations are invited to visit a local PetSmart store during the week for adoption events.
