An investigation is underway into a report of human remains being discovered in a river in Metro Vancouver.
According to Langley RCMP, a member of the public reported the discovery of possible human remains on May 17 at around 3:52 p.m.
The member of the public told the RCMP that they discovered the possible human remains along a creek bed near the Nicomekl River, in the area of 53A Avenue and 206 Street in Langley.
“Frontline officers attended the location, where they located the remains and promptly notified the BC Coroners Service, which has since confirmed that the remains are human,” Langley RCMP said.
Because the remains were discovered due to exposure to the elements, the remains have not yet been identified, nor has a cause of death been determined.
“Our investigators are working in close partnership with the BC Coroners Service to determine the circumstances surrounding the death,” said Langley RCMP Constable Meghan Marsden in a media release.
“Over the past two days, Langley RCMP have remained on scene alongside the E-Division Underwater Recovery Team, conducting additional searches of the river for any items that may be associated with this investigation,” Langley RCMP added.
Langley RCMP is inviting anyone with additional information relating to the incident to contact the force at 604-532-3200, quoting file number 2026-15130.
This marks the second incident of this nature to occur within the past month. In April, two climbers discovered human remains near Shannon Falls.
“Details of the individual located were prematurely released, but we are continuing to work with the BC Coroners Service to investigate the circumstances leading up to the discovery and the identity of the individual,” Staff Sergeant Sascha Banks, Sea to Sky RCMP, Squamish Detachment Operations Commander, said in a release.
