Major Metro Vancouver highway is closing for several nights next week
Summer roadwork season continues in Metro Vancouver, and a major project is closing a highway for two nights next week.
The Ministry of Transportation and Transit is advising drivers and commuters to expect overnight delays on Highway 99 in Delta on Monday, Aug. 10, and Tuesday, Aug. 11.
The traffic pattern changes are to help facilitate crews installing new bridge girders for the 78th Street overpass, part of a new interchange being constructed to support the 148-acre Parkwood Industrial Estates business park in Delta.

“Closures will start each evening with single lanes in each direction before progressing to full highway closures one hour later,” said the Ministry in a release.
“During the closures, traffic will be detoured via Highway 91 and Highway 17. All vehicles, including commercial traffic, will be required to exit Highway 99 at Exit 16 for northbound traffic and Exit 26 for southbound traffic.”
The timing of the Highway 99 closures on Aug. 10 and 11 is as follows:
- Southbound lane closures start at 7 p.m.
- Full southbound closure at 8 p.m.
- Northbound lane closures start at 8 p.m.
- Full northbound closure at 9 p.m.
Closures will be in effect between the Highway 91 and Highway 17 interchanges, with Highway 99 reopening in both directions by 5 a.m. each day.
“Drivers should plan for additional travel time and expect minor delays on Highway 99, Ladner Trunk Road, Highway 91 and surrounding roads during the work,” the Ministry of Transportation and Transit added.

According to the City of Delta, the interchange will feature a new overpass at 78th Street, the relocation of Burns Drive, and new traffic circles at 80th Street and 88th Street, all designed to enhance safety, improve traffic flow, and increase access to Highway 99.
“This project is the culmination of years of work and planning, and we are excited to see Beedie begin construction on infrastructure that will have significant long-term benefits for our city,” said Mayor George V. Harvie in a previous release.
“Industrial capacity in the Lower Mainland is extremely limited, making Parkwood a much-needed addition. The project will create hundreds of construction jobs over the next few years and nearly 1,000 new permanent jobs in Delta. I look forward to seeing this project progress as we work to build the amenities necessary for our city’s future success.”
Construction company NorLand also highlighted that the new interchange will alleviate traffic congestion at the Matthews Interchange and enhance infrastructure for Parkwood Industrial Estates.
“The Lower Mainland and Delta communities will benefit from increased local transportation connectivity and accessibility for residents and businesses in the area,” said NorLand on the project’s website.
Construction to widen Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley also continues this summer and into the fall, and drivers are being notified that traffic-pattern changes are in effect for the major route.

The Government of B.C. announced that the eastbound Highway 1 lanes will shift north of the median and the eastbound off-ramp to 264th Street (Exit 73) will start approximately one kilometre west of its current location.
The traffic-pattern change is expected to last until November 2026 as part of the widening and upgrading of the highway through the Lower Mainland.
Construction on the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension is also impacting drivers and commuters with major traffic disruptions.
The Government of B.C. has announced that a section of Fraser Highway, between 140th Street and 96th Avenue, will be fully closed through Monday, Sept. 7, 2026.
The closures are to support guideway work over the busy roadway, including delivery and lifting of large components.
