Metro Vancouver's first day of summer is gloomy but here's when it will heat up

The first day of summer has arrived, but unfortunately, Metro Vancouver’s weather conditions don’t seem to be cooperating.

According to the latest forecast from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the region’s summer kickoff is expected to be met with gloomy conditions, featuring showers and a risk of thunderstorms. Rain is also expected in the evening.

Luckily, conditions won’t be dreary for long as the summer turnaround is on the way.

ECCC says the sun will reappear starting on Sunday and continuing through to Tuesday, with highs reaching 23°C.

The region’s seasonal forecast model is predicting warmer temperatures for the remainder of June, July, and August.

In a previous interview with Daily Hive, ECCC meteorologist Bobby Sekhon said the agency’s “model output” predicts an 87 per cent probability of “above normal temperatures” for the summer months.

Despite the rain and risk of thunderstorms for today,  there is something to look forward to as June 20 marks the longest day of the year (summer solstice).

“Earth orbits at an angle, so half the year, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun — this is summer in the Northern Hemisphere, and winter in the Southern Hemisphere,” states NASA.

“The other half of the year, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun, creating winter in the north and summer in the south. Solstices happen twice per year, at the points in Earth’s orbit where this tilt is most pronounced.”
