Future uncertain for beloved Vancouver theatre, concerning followers

A beloved Vancouver theatre that holds a huge place in the hearts of members of the city’s art community has announced a programming pause, with its future uncertain.
Pacific Theatre made the programming announcement earlier this month and is asking for the community’s help.
“While we cherish our relationship with the Holy Trinity Anglican Church – who own and operate the Chalmers Heritage Building – the venue is not currently viable for our long-term, sustainable operations,” Pacific Theatre said on its website.
While shows that are scheduled to run will go on as planned for most of the year, as of the end of December 2025, the theatre’s administration will be pausing programming while it figures out its next steps.
Pacific Theatre presents a diverse range of genres and types of shows, including festivals and other special events. One of those festivals begins this weekend and runs until Monday.

Ailing building presents problems for Vancouver theatre

One of the main issues that Pacific Theatre is addressing is the structural issues in the current building located on West 12th Avenue. And like other theatres we’ve heard from, the pandemic was not kind to this venue.
“The building requires a major structural upgrade (estimated at more than $500,000) alongside water ingress remediation. In addition, the intimate size of the theatre, coupled with restrictions around the number of permitted performances per week, has hampered PT’s ability to increase revenue in what has been a challenging recovery period following the pandemic,” notes the announcement.
The theatre plans to vacate the building at the end of December while it determines its future plans.
“In the fall of 2025, we will produce a smaller, scaled-down season at our venue. After our exit in January 2026, the PT leadership and its Board of Directors will engage in internal strategic planning,” a statement from Pacific Theatre says.
Pacific Theatre is calling its next phase a reinvention.
Starting this fall, Pacific Theatre will engage with its community, including artists and followers, to offer them the opportunity to influence the future of the theatre.
The response from the community has been loud.
“There’s nothing around that’s like Pacific Theatre. Quality productions but at accessible prices. I hope you’ll land somewhere that will allow you to continue this legacy,” one follower said on Instagram.
Another follower said, “Vancouver NEEDS Pacific Theatre. The people NEED Pacific Theatre!”
If you’d like to contribute to the change, the theatre is also seeking donations as it attempts to raise funds. Its first goal is to raise $100,000 to offset the costs of its fall programming season. Another way Pacific Theatre is asking for help is by asking its followers to share its story.
