'MasterChef Canada' contestants dish on their favourite Vancouver restaurants | Daily Hive

MasterChef Canada Season 9 is preparing to air on CTV beginning Sept. 22 (and will be available for streaming the following day on Crave), and this season features plenty of representation from Vancouver.

For those not in the know, the 11-episode season will have 16 Canadian home cooks competing for the chance to win a $100,000 cash prize and the title of MasterChef Canada champion. Each week will test these home cooks through a series of high-pressure and precision-focused challenges.

Throughout the show, the group of home cooks will be mentored by returning judges like Canadian Screen Award-winning host and Season 3 winner Mary Berg, internationally acclaimed chef and author Hugh Acheson, and chef-restaurateur Craig Wong.

Among the many Canadians contestants, three Vancouverites are entering the MasterChef Canada kitchen. These chefs include filmmaker and DJ Harley Maranan, Indigenous and trans entrepreneur and video game streamer Hekate, and sommelier Jason Yamasaki.

MasterChef Canada shared a clip where each home cook shouted out one of their favourite restaurants, and we have to commend the Vancouver cooks for their picks.

Firstly, Marana shouted out Nightingale (1017 W. Hastings St., Vancouver), citing that its fried chicken is “unreal.” The two-level restaurant is the creation of Chef David Hawksworth, who is also behind the award-winning Hawksworth Restaurant at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia.

Next, Yamasaki shouted out the local favourite Breeze Bar (213 Carrall St., Vancouver), adding that he is there “as much as possible.” The bar is known for its “trashy and classy” vibe, best shown through its offerings like its OG Caviar Hot Dog, which is a hot dog topped with Cheez Whiz and Kaluga Caviar.

Finally, Hekate gave a shoutout to a popular sports bar: Score on Davie (1262 Davie St., Vancouver).

“I actually used to work at the Score on Davie, and they have an amazing menu there,” said Hekate.
