A 37-year-old man died after being shot by police in the Downtown Eastside early on Tuesday morning.

According to VPD Const. Tania Visintin, the incident took place just before 5 am, when police responded to a request for assistance by BC Ambulance Service at a residential building near Princess Avenue and Hastings Street, for a man who was acting “erratic and aggressive.”

“The man had allegedly smashed the window to his room and was throwing large wooden objects out of the window onto the street,” said Visintin. “He had multiple injuries to his body as a result.”

Prior to police arrival, she said, the man had left his residence and went to the street carrying a weapon.

“Reports came in that this man was chasing people with the weapon and using it in an aggressive and threatening manner,” she furthered. “The man was subsequently shot by police.”

Now, the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has been notified as legislated by the BC Police Act and will be investigating.

Police said the intersection of Princess Avenue and Hastings Street will be closed for most of the day as the investigation continues.
