A 27-year-old Vancouver man has been charged for a violent carjacking and pepper spray attack that took place in the city’s downtown core last week.
On Friday, September 21, Vancouver police received a call around 8:40 am from a male victim reporting he had just been pepper-sprayed in the parking lot at Cambie and Pender Street by a man who then stole the victim’s car.
The suspect sped down the area of West Georgia Street and Hamilton, where he was involved in a number of collisions, including with a pedestrian, “who was near the roadway, not doing anything wrong,” said VPD Const. Jason Doucette, in an earlier release.
The suspect jumped out of the vehicle, and when a group of construction workers gave chase, they were also pepper-sprayed. Despite this, they were still able to hold the man until police arrived on the scene minutes later.
Police have charged Jesse William Swain with the following:
- Three counts of assault with a weapon
- Robbery
- Dangerous driving causing bodily harm
- Failing to stop at an accident scene involving bodily harm
- Failing to stop at an accident with a vehicle
- Theft under $5000
Swain remains in custody.
