After the death of a child at an unlicensed daycare in East Vancouver in 2017, VPD said on Thursday that charges have now been laid in connection with the case.

The investigation began on January 18, 2017 when officers were called to a residence in the area of Commercial Drive and Kitchener Street just after 4 pm, after receiving a report about the death of a child.

The child was identified as Macallan Saini who also went by ‘Baby Mac.’ He died after being found unresponsive in a playpen at the home.

Now, 41-year-old Susy Yasmine Saad is charged with two counts of Failure to provide necessaries of life and one count of Fraud over $5,000, in connection with Macallan’s death.

“The details of this file are just gut-wrenching,” said VPD Const. Tania Visintin. “Investigators have worked diligently since this terrible incident occurred to ensure the person accused would be held responsible.”

Saad appeared in court on Tuesday, where she was formally charged, before being released on conditions. Her next court appearance is scheduled for September.

“As nothing can take away the pain of losing a child, we hope the family can find some closure knowing that charges have been laid,” said Visintin.
