Four intersections along the main retail strip of Commercial Drive are seeing the installation of new crosswalks, with each intersection’s entire quadrangle receiving the colours of the Italian flag.

But the design is not a literal representation of the Italian flag — not akin to the LGBTQ rainbow flag crosswalks — as they are instead mosaic of fragmented triangular shapes with the trio of colours.

The first permanent crosswalks at the prominent intersection of Commercial Drive and East 1st Avenue are already complete, and work is quickly progressing on the remaining crosswalks ahead of Italian Day festivities on June 9.

Fortis BC is funding the full cost of the installation, and partnered with the Commercial Drive Business Society.

The public art treatment was first announced in September 2018, shortly after the natural gas utility completed extensive, disruptive work on upgrading and expanding its ageing gas line under East 1st Avenue.
