An impaired driver in Langley almost hit an RCMP officer who was conducting laser speed enforcement.
The incident occurred yesterday at Robertson Crescent and 242 Street.
Langley RCMP states that the driver was travelling at 93 km/h in a 60 km/h zone and had initially slowed down when he was flagged to do so, but then suddenly attempted to evade police.
“Instead of stopping safely, they swerved off the roadway to the right of the officer and accelerated to well over 100 km/h,” Langley RCMP said in a release.
Another officer apparently witnessed the situation and was able to intercept the vehicle before the driver arrived home. RCMP stated that the driver was visibly impaired and failed two roadside screening tests.
The driver is facing numerous violations and fines, including a 90-day roadside prohibition, a 30-day vehicle impound, and 11 charges under the BC Motor Vehicle Act, which total over $2,000 in fines and more than $8,225 in penalty points.
This incident highlights the very real dangers impaired and reckless drivers pose, not only to the public, but to police officers doing their jobs roadside,
said Sergeant Zynal Sharoom with the Langley RCMP in a statement. If you choose to drink and drive, you are not only risking lives, but you are setting yourself up to face serious financial and legal consequences.
The incident led the Langley RCMP to offer a pro tip for drivers on X:
