A Vancouver-area rescue group that is dealing with an inundation of kittens with more “pouring in daily” is putting out a call for temporary foster parents.

Big and Small Rescue Society currently has more than 20 kittens in their care, with more arriving this week.

The rescue group operates in the Vancouver-area, but pulls many of its animals from overcrowded and overwhelmed California shelters in regions that suffer from animal overpopulation and inadequate spay/neuter programs.

The week around July 4th is especially a problem in US shelters, which see many people unfortunately dropping off or abandoning their animals as they head away for vacation, and fearful pets running away and getting lost as a result of fireworks. The problem is so acute it has prompted a Sacramento shelter that is at maximum capacity to offer free adoptions in hopes of making room.

The kittens that Big and Small Rescue are seeking foster homes for come from a very impoverished area due east of Los Angeles, where “the shelters are overwhelmed and often have to euthanize perfectly healthy kittens.”

“It is just heartbreaking. That is why we are offering to help,” a coordinator for the group tells Daily Hive.

But in order for the group to save more animals, it needs volunteers to help care for the young felines while it finds forever homes.

It is putting out an urgent call for people who can open their homes and hearts to kittens, whether it’s a single newborn — or an entire litter.

The group is looking for animal lovers who can care for the wee kittens, keep them safe and attend any vet appointments necessary.

The animals will have been vetted by the shelter veterinarians in the US as well as evaluated by a vet in Vancouver. They have received their first vaccine (FVRCP), had flea treatments and are dewormed.

The group is also looking for people to foster dogs temporarily so it can save more animals from crowded shelters. To learn more, head to their website and fill out an online application form.
