Nearly 30-year-old Metro Vancouver restaurant damaged in fire

On Tuesday night, popular New Westminster restaurant Ki Sushi was the victim of a fire.

New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services (NWFRS) shared that they were dispatched just past 10 p.m. for a structure fire on 8th Street and Carnarvon.

“Crews initially attacked the fire from the exterior due to interior conditions,” shared New Westminster Fire Chief Erin Williams, adding that there were no reports of injuries.

Additionally, NWFRS shared that the cause of the fire is currently under investigation and that crews remain on scene to monitor hotspots.

Ki Sushi first opened its doors in 1997 and is known for its selection of sushi and other Japanese dishes.

“Ki Sushi is an award-winning Japanese restaurant with strong roots in the New Westminster community,” wrote the restaurant on its website. “Here we pride ourselves on our fast lunch and dinner service, and on offering the freshest sushi and Japanese fare, including combo deals and boxes, in a comfortable, welcoming environment.”

While an official comment from the restaurant has yet to be shared, many fans took to Reddit to share the news of the fire and their concerns for the much-loved spot.

“I hope everyone got out safe. We been monthly delivery patrons for the past 30 years; literally ordered our usual combos last night!” wrote one user. “We wish them a speedy recovery. New West’s sushi landscape wouldn’t be the same without them.”

“OH NAUR, NOT THE KI SUSHI. literally a nostalgic business for over 20 years,” shared another.

“This is so sad, [my] favourite sushi place, and I’ve always found the people there to be awesome. ): It sucks this has happened again, and so much worse this time,” added a third.

Ki Sushi has yet to comment on when and if it will reopen.
