Vancouver bakery asks for help to stay open after smashed front window

Whether it’s exorbitantly increased rents or the increase in food costs, it’s no secret that Vancouver restaurants are struggling. This is the same case for Kanadell Japanese Bakery, which took to Instagram asking the community for help to remain open after someone smashed its store window.

“Just a few days earlier, the neighbouring store had its window broken in the same way,” shared the bakery. “We’re not sure if it was the same person, but it doesn’t seem like they were trying to break in or steal anything — just to cause damage.”

The bakery reassured customers that since the damage happened at night, no one was hurt. However, its large front window was completely shattered.

Unfortunately, situations like this appear to be a common issue among Vancouver businesses recently. In February, Dished reported on damages at Nero Waffles, which the cafe said was its fifth break-in. Additionally, JJ Bean told Dished that damages like broken glass were one of the reasons for the closure of its Dunsmuir location, among others, such as concerns for employee safety.

For Kanadell, the damage to its window is just one of the financial problems the bakery is facing.

“As it is, the economy is already tough, and like many others, our store has been struggling with a significant drop in sales and rising expenses,” said the bakery.

According to the Instagram post, Kanadell’s winter sales have declined by an estimated 22 per cent compared to the previous year.

“Even under these circumstances, we’ve been doing everything we can — cutting costs wherever possible — just to keep the business going,” said Kanadell. “Right now, we simply don’t have the resources to repair the window.”

That’s why Kanadell is asking for community support to help the much-loved bakery remain open. It’s encouraging patrons to donate through a GoFundMe with a $7,000 goal. As of publishing, $4,700 has already been donated.

“This bakery has been cherished by so many people in our community, and we are determined to keep it going, no matter what,” said the bakery.

Located at 3569 E Hasting St., Kanadell is best known for its adorable animal-shaped treats like its Yuzu Lemon Meringue Tarts and its Bear Buns.
