Folks in Vancouver already know that we’re a hot spot when it comes to celebrity-approved dining spots. Just look at Vij’s, for instance. And while it’s cool to see your favourite celebrities dining at Vancouver restaurants, it’s even cooler to hear them rave about them and give you their recommendations.

That’s why when Dished had the chance to speak with comedian Ivan Decker on the snowy streets of Yaletown, we knew we had to ask him about his ideal day in Vancouver, alongside some of his favourite Vancouver eats.

For those unfamiliar, Decker is an award-winning comedian who grew up here in Vancouver. His debut comedy album, I Wanted to be a Dinosaur, earned him the 2018 Juno award for Comedy Album of the Year, and he was named a Comic To Watch by TBS at the New York Comedy Festival.

When Dished asked him how he would spend a perfect day in the city, Decker said that any day out in Vancouver has to start with a stop at Northern Cafe.

Considering the spot was named one of the top 100 places to eat in 2023, we can’t blame him for choosing this Northern Cafe for breakfast. He called the greasy spoon incredibly unique and said, “It’s its own thing; you have to go.”

Located in deep South Vancouver atĀ 1640 East Kent Avenue, Northern Cafe has been in operation since 1949. In 2008, it was taken over by the Mah family, who continues to run it to this day.

As for recommendations, Decker spoke highly of the corned beef hash, which he said will “change your life.” He also shouted out the bottomless coffee, described as “the way the Lord intended.”

After a hearty breakfast, Decker said he would head to Granville Island and rent a boat to drive up the Burrard Inlet.

“You will be bored of seals and dolphins by the end of the day; there are so many,” the comedian said.

And while in Granville Island, Decker said he had to stop at Lee’s Donuts, calling it “incredible.” With its many classic yeast and cake donuts (including its much-loved jelly-filled donut), you can’t go wrong with any of the treats on its menu.

When it comes to lunch, Decker said he would head to Harbour Oyster Bar for the “incredible atmosphere” and delicious oysters. “They have oysters from all across North America. If you’re a fan of oysters, then this is the place to go,” he said. Talk about an oyster lover’s paradise.

Then, after enjoying a nice stroll around Lost Lagoon, Decker said he would head to his favourite restaurant in Vancouver: CinCin. This spot is best known for its drool-worthy pasta and woodfire eats. Located at 1154 Robson Street, visitors just need to climb the fairytale staircase to visit this spot.

Decker specifically drew attention to the Veal Osso Bucco and said it comes with a tiny spoon so you can enjoy the bone marrow. We’re drooling just thinking about it.
