The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is asking for public assistance after a fatal shooting in Richmond on Friday evening.

The incident occurred shortly after 7:30 pm, when police received reports of gunshots at the Manzo Restaurant on 9020 Capstan Way. IHIT said in a statement that two men had suffered from gunshot wounds.

One of the victims, 44-year-old Jian Jun Zhu, passed away from his injuries, while the second victim was taken to hospital. He was treated for non-life threatening injuries and has since been released.

IHIT has taken conduct of the investigation and is working with the Richmond RCMP to canvass for witnesses and video surveillance footage. Forensic investigators are also working to examine physical evidence that was gathered from the scene.

IHIT says that “both victims are well known to police and this is believed to be a targeted event.”

It’s unclear, however, whether the incident is connected to the Lower Mainland gang conflict or any other recent acts of violence.

“This was a brazen shooting that could have resulted in further victims,” says Sergeant Frank Jang of IHIT. “IHIT will be engaging all of its partners including CFSEU-BC and RCMP Federal Policing to identify those responsible.”

Anyone with dashcam footage that was in the area of Garden City Road, between Capstan Way and Cambie Road, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm is asked to contact authorities.

Those with information are asked to contact the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-4448 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
