How much money Canada’s men's national team made at the FIFA World Cup
Canada may have bowed out in the Round of 16 at the latest FIFA World Cup, but they still picked up a decent payday in the process.
For the first time in World Cup history, the Canadian men found a way to rank inside the top 15 teams at the tournament. Their magical run came to an end against Morocco, and with the tournament ending on Sunday, it was confirmed that Canada finished 14th overall in a group of 48 nations.
Every team that qualifies for the World Cup is entitled to prize money, and the total amount only gets higher the better you wind up at the end of the tournament. That means that Canada was able to snag a pretty penny for their efforts.
In total, FIFA reportedly awarded Canada US$16 million (C$22.5 million) for finishing 14th, which is the same amount awarded to the teams that finished from 9th to 16th.

Canada will take home the same amount of prize money as Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, the United States, Portugal, Egypt, and Paraguay.
FIFA will be doling out a reported total of US$871 million in prize money to participating countries.
Here is a full rundown of FIFA’s reported prize money structure at this year’s World Cup:
- Champions: US$51 million
- Runners-up: US$34 million
- Third-place: US$30 million
- Fourth-place: US$28 million
- 5th-8th place: US$20 million
- 9th-16th place: US$16 million
- 17th-32nd place: US$12 million
- 33rd-48th place: US$10 million
The minimum amount of prize money being given out is US$10 million, which was awarded to teams that placed 33rd to 48th. The maximum amount is reserved for the World Cup champion, Spain, who will be given a whopping $51 million for their efforts.
That is considerably more than what runner-up Argentina will take home at $34 million.
There has been some debate about whether the World Cup should keep a third-place game, but there is a slight difference in prize money between third and fourth place. The third-place England will take home $30 million while the fourth-place France will take home a sliver less at $28 million.
