Canada's FIFA World Cup run comes to an end with heartbreaking loss to Morocco

The Canadians put up a great fight, but Morocco struck early in the second half to take their Round of 16 match 3-0 in Houston. It was Azzedine Ounah who opened the scoring at the 49th minute, and it stood up as the game-winner.
Ounah would add a second goal at the 81st minute to put things out of reach, while Soufiane Rahimi notched another for Morocco in stoppage time.
It ends an impressive run for the Canadian men, who advanced to the Round of 16 for the first time in World Cup history.

This is the second time that Canada has lost to Morocco at the men’s World Cup, dropping a 2-1 decision during a group-stage match at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
Canada was the better team in the first half against Morocco. The Canadians controlled the pace of play and had the better chances in the first 45 minutes. Their best chance came from Tani Oluwaseyi, who had a brilliant touch to open up a point-blank shot at the Moroccan goal.
It was goalkeeper Yassine Bounou who was able to turn aside the chance and keep things 0-0 headed into the second half.

The tides turned in the second half, as the Moroccans made the necessary adjustments to break through against the Canadians. Canada made a valiant effort for the equalizer, but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Jonathan David had perhaps the best chance to knot things up, missing on a free kick just outside the box at the 77th minute.

Alphonso Davies did not make an appearance in this all-important Round of 16 match, staying on the Canadian bench for the entire 90 minutes.
Morocco will move on to the World Cup quarter-final, where they will meet the winner of France-Paraguay next Thursday in Boston.
Canada ends their 2026 World Cup experience with two victories against Qatar (6-0) in the group stage and South Africa (1-0) in the Round of 32. Their two losses came at the hands of Switzerland (2-1) in the group stage and now Morocco (3-0) in the Round of 16.
They had just one draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina (1-1) in their opening game.
It may not have been the ending that Canadian fans wanted, but this is still an incredible achievement for the men’s national team. Nobody thought that Canada would not only get this far into the World Cup but also put up such a fight against a top team like Morocco.
Canada Soccer is on the rise, and who knows how high they can get before the 2030 FIFA World Cup arrives.
