Where Canada ranks in the FIFA World Cup final standings

The Canadian men’s national team went further than ever before at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Not only did Canada advance from the group stage for the first time, they also picked up their first-ever knockout round victory against South Africa, before falling to Morocco in the Round of 16.

Canada finished the 48-team tournament in 14th place, just behind Brazil, the United States, and Portugal.

Four years ago in Qatar, Canada finished second-last, 31st out of 32 teams. And in 1986, Canada was dead-last, 24th out of 24 teams.

“In Canada’s third appearance in the global showpiece, and their first on home soil, they achieved a slew of milestones,” reads an excerpt on FIFA’s website. “A first-ever point was followed by a first group stage win, a first knockout phase appearance, a first knockout round win and a record number of goals, as the history books of Canadian football were given a thorough update.

“The Reds subsequently fell to defeat to Morocco in Houston at the Round of 16 stage, but the fans were left with a sense of pride about their performances.”

What made their showing all the more impressive was that they played the vast majority of the tournament without Alphonso Davies. The 25-year-old played just 15 minutes all tournament, coming in as a substitute in the Round of 16 versus Morocco.

While they still have a ways to go before being considered a powerhouse themselves, this showing at the FIFA World Cup displays just how much improvement the Canadian men’s national team has made in recent years. The team is currently ranked 30th in the FIFA men’s world ranking, four spots off the national record of 26th.
