Historic home for sale has ties to renowned Vancouver restaurateur

If you’ve ever wanted to own a piece of Vancouver history and have a spare couple million dollars and change, a recently listed historic home might be the opportunity you’re looking for.
According to a Peak to Pier Real Estate Group listing, the home was built between 1900 and 1903 at 1380 Hornby St. Re/Max says it was the “last standing laneway home in Yaletown.”
“It is the laneway home to the Leslie House that was formerly Umberto’s restaurant,” it adds.

The Vancouver Heritage Foundation relocated the house to its current Mole Hill address at 1117-1119 Pendrell St.
“The Victorian cottage on the lane behind Umberto’s well-known Yellow House restaurant was donated by Mr. Menghi to Vancouver Heritage Foundation,” VHF says.
“The basement was first a stable, then a cellar and a workshop,” it adds.
Since then, the property has been fully restored, and it was converted from a single-family home to a strata duplex in 2003. Interested parties can either buy each half individually or buy the entire duplex.
Between the two halves, the Leslie Lane House features two bedrooms and three bathrooms and is currently listed as a whole for $2,240,000.

“Through the 1970s, the lane house was home to Olive and Mano Herendy, who operated a couturier business. Many baby boomer brides can recall hours of wedding dress fittings here,” VHF says.
