Vancouver solarium for rent in shared home ain't cheap

If you’re looking for an affordable place for rent, a solarium was recently listed in Vancouver, but it’s not cheap.

Listed as a private room for rent on Facebook Marketplace, the rental is located right by Science World, so you can’t complain about the location.

You might be able to complain about the price, though. The solarium has been listed for $1,350 plus utilities. While on paper, that is far below the average asking rent in Metro Vancouver, it becomes less of a steal when you consider the home is shared with two other people and the fact that you’re living in a solarium that’ll likely heat up during the summer months.

The marketplace listing calls the home a spacious three-bedroom, 1,100 sq. ft. suite. It features three bedrooms if you include the solarium and two bathrooms. It also includes a full kitchen with many appliances like a rice cooker, blender, mixer and dishwasher.

Another thing the rental has going for it is that it doesn’t lock the future occupant into a lease. The listing says the lease is flexible and could be month-to-month, or the new occupant can rent the Vancouver unit for a year.

There’s a large living room, an electric fireplace and in-suite laundry.

“Hot water is also included!” the listing notes. The building also includes a billiards and party room. To the credit of the person listing the space, the entire unit does seem pretty spacious compared to the average Vancouver apartment.

Aside from quick access to Science World and False Creek, the unit is a short walk to Main-Terminal SkyTrain Station and around a 20-minute walk to downtown Vancouver.

The person who listed the Vancouver unit said they’re looking for clean, responsible and respectful people.

Right now, the average asking rent for a one-bedroom unit in Vancouver, according to Rentals.ca, is $2,518. Rentals.ca also shared some numbers for the average asking rents for roommate rentals, which in BC it puts at around $1,146 per month, a couple hundred bucks less than this listing. In the case of a listing like this, it boils down to whether or not you consider a solarium a bedroom.

Compared to some of the ridiculous rentals we’ve seen, this one doesn’t seem as bad, but what do you think? Is this too much, or is it a decent price for what’s on offer?
