Highway 1 exit closure to impact Metro Vancouver drivers for several weeks

Work to widen Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley continues this spring, and drivers are being warned that traffic-pattern changes may impact overnight commutes as early as this weekend.
The Government of B.C. announced that overnight traffic-pattern changes are planned for Highway 1 at Highway 11 as part of the widening and upgrade of the highway through the Lower Mainland.
Drivers are warned that the off-ramp from Highway 1 westbound to Highway 11 will be closed for several dates in April and May.
“As construction progresses on widening Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley, drivers will be rerouted through the McCallum Road Interchange (exit 90) while the overnight off-ramp closures are in place,” said the Ministry of Transportation and Transit in a release.

“The off-ramp will be closed nightly between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. April 24 to 29 and May 4 to 13,” added the Ministry. “The closures are necessary for contractors to relocate utilities.”
The speed limit on Highway 11 will be reduced to 50 km/h on Highway 11, and drivers are encouraged to give themselves extra travel time through the area.
“Travellers are encouraged to be patient as these traffic patterns are needed to allow work to progress safely during this phase of the Fraser Valley Highway 1 Corridor Improvement Program,” added the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.
“Drivers are reminded to slow down and use caution, obey signage and traffic-control personnel, and watch for roadside workers.”
The latest construction work is part of improvements to a 21 km stretch of Highway 1 between the 264th Street Interchange in Langley and Highway 11 in Abbotsford.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said online that widening Highway 1 will enable it to add improvements like HOV/EV lanes both east and westbound, bus-on-shoulder lanes in each direction, truck climbing lanes, and a truck staging area.
The Government of B.C. has approved $2.34 billion in provincial funding for this section of the project.
