Another Highway 1 closure could lead to delays for Metro Vancouver drivers next month

A full overnight closure of a busy section of Highway 1, the second in three months, could see Metro Vancouver drivers and commuters face delays in February.

The City of North Vancouver announced that the new overpass bridge for pedestrians and cyclists has reached an important milestone over the Upper Levels Highway.

For crews to safely install a portion of the Casano-Loutet Overpass over the highway, a section of Highway 1 will be closed for one evening in early February 2026.

According to the City, the exact date of the closure is still to be determined by the Ministry of Transportation and Transit.

“The exact closure date is based on Ministry approval and weather conditions, and will be shared on this page once available,” said the City of North Vancouver on its website.

The City added that the closure will take place between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., and a detour will be made available.

It will be the second closure of Highway 1 in Metro Vancouver in three months for the installation of a bridge, following the installation of the Burnaby Lake Pedestrian-Cyclist Overpass in November.

The City of North Vancouver announced in 2024 that it received $4 million in funding from the provincial government for its Casano-Loutet Overpass project.

The overpass will link the Loutet and Cedar Village neighbourhoods, essentially establishing a seamless connection for pedestrians and cyclists between Rufus Drive’s north and south sides. It will also connect with existing and future greenway corridors.

Currently, the shortest walking distance from the future bridge’s end points is a 26-minute detour across Lynn Valley Road interchange to the west, according to Google Maps.

The Casano-Loutet Overpass is expected to be completed by summer 2026.

“The overpass is designed with safety and comfort in mind, and will offer a range of amenities including a visually appealing design, built-in lighting, accessible approach pathways and rest areas,” added the City online.

“Once complete, the Casano-Loutet Overpass will provide people walking, rolling and cycling with a safe and accessible pathway between the City’s schools, services and neighbourhoods, over the Upper Levels Highway.”

Another new pedestrian and cyclist bridge is being proposed for Burnaby, this time over railroad tracks in the Brentwood neighbourhood.

The City of Burnaby is considering five possible sites for a north-south pedestrian and cyclist overpass spanning Canadian National’s (CN) active east-west railway through the district.
