Hyped Vancouver restaurant serving Thai chicken rice softly opens today
Vancouver is home to plenty of exciting restaurants, and a new one that has garnered some serious hype has just softly opened in the city. Introducing Hen, a new eatery specializing in authentic Thai chicken rice, a.k.a Khao Man Gai.
“Vancouver, we are so excited to meet you,” wrote the restaurant on Instagram. “Hen started with a simple mission: share real Thai chicken rice ā Khao Man Gai just like we grew up eating. Now we are bringing that same comfort and authenticity to Canada.”
The restaurant is currently softly open from Aug. 5 to 8, starting at 11 a.m. until sold out.
The soft opening menu features four different plates, including The Original (a traditional poached chicken thigh with ginger rice and soybean sauce), The Crispy (crispy boneless chicken with ginger rice and Hen sriracha sauce), The Mix (Poached and Crispy Chicken with ginger rice, soybean sauce, and Hen sriracha sauce), and The Heat (spicy crispy goneless chicken with ginger rice and Hen sriracha sauce).Ā It is also offering Thai Iced Tea and mango sticky rice.

The restaurant shared on its website that Khao Man Gai translates directly from Thai to English as “Fatty Rice Chicken.”
“A far cry from the usual blend of sweet, sour, and spicy that most Thai food is known for, Khao Man Gaiās neutral flavors may come as a surprise to the uninitiated. It was introduced to Thai locals by Hainanese migrants decades ago, before quickly becoming a local favorite. Today it remains one of the most popular dishes in Thai cuisine,” wrote Hen.
This is actually the second outpost for the brand, with its first opening in Boston back in 2019. Now the team has found a new home for the Thai chicken rice here in Vancouver.
