In the 1993 election, Fry unseated Prime Minister Kim Campbell of the Progressive Conservatives in a historic upset.
Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Fry holds a master’s degree in English Literature from Oxford University and earned her medical degree with Honours from the Royal College of Surgeons.
She immigrated to Canada in 1970 and soon after began practicing family medicine at St. Paul’s Hospital in downtown Vancouver. In addition to her medical career, Fry served as the head of several medical associations and was a host on the CBC television program Doctor, Doctor. She is also the mother of Vancouver city councillor Pete Fry.
Following the 2023 federal electoral district redistribution, based on 2021 census data, the boundaries of Vancouver Centre were redrawn. Areas in Kitsilano, Burrard Slopes, Fairview, and False Creek South were removed from the riding, while the vast majority of downtown Vancouver’s peninsula remained within its borders.
