Mark Carney and the Liberal Party of Canada are expected to form government, and the prime minister has now addressed the country.
Diana Fox Carney came out first, speaking highly of her husband before introducing him.
“He’s thoughtful, respectful and honest,” she said, adding that she could not be more proud of him.
Carney received raucous applause and responded, saying, “That is the spirit of Nepean.”

The prime minister began his speech with a question.
“Who’s ready? Who’s ready to stand up for Canada with me? And who’s ready to build Canada strong?”
The crowd responded with cheers. Carney thanked and congratulated other party leaders, specifically naming former NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh and Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre for their service to the country.
Carney won his seat in Nepean, which gave him a seat in the House of Commons and now allows him to enter Parliament for the first time.
Before the election, both Poilievre and Carney had very different messages for Canadians. Poilievre’s campaign ads spoke of a broken Canada, while Carney shared hope for the future and unity for the country.
A specific Trump card was also a key election issue on the campaign trail.
The U.S. president made his presence known as the two frontrunners, Carney and Poilievre, campaigned for Canada’s leadership. Trump’s repeated comments about Canada becoming the 51st state and threats of imposing tariffs made Canadian headlines, and both political leaders had opportunities to respond.
In his victory speech, Carney said he learned the importance of three values from Canadians on the campaign trail: humility, ambition, and unity.
Over the next few weeks, we’ll likely learn more about how Carney and the Liberal Party of Canada will govern the country with their minority government.
Carney also addressed the millions of voters who didn’t vote for him, saying he would do his best to represent all Canadians.
The Liberal Party of Canada was all but ruled out of winning this election when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was the party’s leader. Trudeau resigned as prime minister at the beginning of the year.
Soon after, Carney was declared the new leader of the Liberal Party. In March, we learned that Canadians would vote in this election.
“Let’s put an end to the division and anger of the past,” Carney said.
In ending his speech, Carney also spoke of the relationship between Canada and the United States.
“We’re over the shock of the American betrayal,” Carney said, adding, “We have to take care of each other.”
Carney said that if the United States didn’t want to be at the forefront of the global economy, Canada would.
“Together we will build a Canada worthy of our values. We will build Canada strong. Canada free. Canada forever.”
