Grouse Mountain Canada flag officially breaks a record but is it facing the wrong way?

It’s official: the recently installed Canada flag up at Grouse Mountain has broken the record for the largest flag unfurled on a mountain, according to Guinness World Records.

Vancouver singer-songwriter Marie Hui shared the accolade on Instagram about the 160m x 80m flag.

Hui was invited to commemorate the achievement by singing O Canada in front of the flag.

Installed on “The Cut” ski run, the flag spans approximately the size of two football fields or the length of two station platforms on the SkyTrain’s Expo/Millennium system. The flag was transported up the mountain using a back access road, called Mountain Highway, by truck and trailer.

However, some have concerns about the position of the flag.

“You guys need to rotate that flag,” someone said in response to our story on X. Others echoed the sentiment, adding that the maple leaf should be pointed left.

Others pointed out that according to official protocol, a flag shouldn’t be touching the ground.

According to the Government of Canada, there are certain rules around how a flag is to be positioned. Vertical and horizontal placement are both acceptable, but it depends on the way the maple leaf is pointing. Based on this photo, the flag is currently in position 2:

“When flying the flag vertically, if the flag is simply rotated a quarter-turn to the right from its horizontal position, so that the tip of the maple leaf points to the right, the canton ends up in the wrong position (upper-right). This does not respect the position of honour of the canton,” the Canadian government’s website states.

Many don’t seem to care about how it’s positioned, including former Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole.

It took over 70 people to position the roughly 3,000 lb. flag so it would likely be just as herculean an effort to rotate it.

We’ve put the concerns about the Canada flag position to Grouse Mountain Resort and will update this story when we hear back.
