The Vancouver Canucks are in the midst of an injury crisis.
It does make you wonder, could they look to the waiver wire for reinforcements?
If so, one former member of the organization has just become available via waivers.
Defenceman Kyle Burroughs was waived by the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday. He has yet to play a game this season.
The 30-year-old is being waived after he began the season on injured reserve. Burroughs has been absent from the Kings’ lineup after blocking a shot in a preseason game back on Sept. 30. Even though he’s returning to health, there appears to be no room on the Kings’ roster for him.
Burroughs, who grew up in Langley, B.C., spent two seasons with the Canucks back in 2021-22 and 2022-23. He played 100 games for the Canucks across those two seasons, registering three goals and 10 points in those contests.
What Burroughs was best known for was his physicality and willingness to drop the gloves. Even though he’s only listed at 6-foot, 195-pounds, the hard-nose defenceman led the Canucks with 10 fighting majors over his two seasons in Vancouver.
He left the Canucks to sign a three-year deal worth $1.1 million with the San Jose Sharks back in free agency in 2023. During the 2024 offseason, he was traded from the Sharks to the Kings in exchange for forward Carl Grundstrom. He played 33 games for the Kings last season.
Throughout his NHL career, Burroughs has played 201 games, registering five goals and 22 points in the process. He also has 216 career penalty minutes, which includes 18 fights at the NHL level.
