Sherwood on pace to break Bure’s single-season Vancouver Canucks goals record

Even the most staunch Kiefer Sherwood supporters didn’t see this coming.

We’re 12 games into this Vancouver Canucks season, and scoring goals has been a problem.

At least, it’s been a problem for everyone not named Sherwood.

The pesky Canucks winger has scored nine goals for the Canucks in his first 12 games, after registering a hat trick against the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night.

That ties him with six other players for the most goals in the NHL.

Sherwood’s start hasn’t gone unnoticed by his peers.

“The guy can’t miss right now,” Jake DeBrusk said following the Canucks win over the St. Louis Blues.

He’s not wrong. If it weren’t for a Tyler Myers offside against the Edmonton Oilers. Sherwood would be leading the NHL in goals right now.

Regardless, his start has been unbelievable, and it’s up there with some of the hottest starts in Canucks history.

Elias Pettersson’s 10 goals in his first 10 games as a rookie come to mind. Alex Mogilny also had nine goals in his first nine games back in 1995-96.

Pettersson’s goal scoring tailed off in his rookie campaign, although he did finish with a respectable 28 goals in 71 games, en route to winning the Calder Trophy.

Mogilny, however, finished with 55 goals in 1995-96, the third-best goal-scoring season ever by a Canucks forward.

Sherwood is on pace to topple that mark. In fact, he’s on pace for the most goals scored by a Canucks player in a single season.

With nine goals in 12 games, the 30-year-old is on pace for 61 goals. That would break Pavel Bure’s franchise record of 60 goals in one campaign.

Pretty unreal stuff from a guy who’s currently the Canucks 10th-highest paid forward, making just $1.5 million this season.

While Sherwood’s 37.5 per cent shooting rate is unsustainable, he may be in line for one of those breakout seasons that no one saw coming.

Seasons like this have occurred in Canucks history. Darcy Rota scored 42 goals back in 1982-83 when he had never registered more than 25 goals in a single season. Even Andrei Kuzmenko’s 39 goals stand out as a surprise, considering that he’s only scored 35 goals in more than two years since then.

Sherwood’s offence has come at a much-needed time, considering that the Canucks rank 27th in goals per game. So far this season, Sherwood has scored 29 per cent of all goals for the Canucks.
