Record weekend attendance for FIFA World Cup Vancouver Fan Festival at the PNE

Buoyed by four high-profile matches, with the FIFA World Cup now well into its high-stakes knockout elimination rounds, the official free FIFA Fan Festival Vancouver saw record weekend attendance this past weekend.

A total of 66,866 people descended on the PNE fairgrounds at Hastings Park over the two-day weekend of Saturday, July 4 and Sunday, July 5. While no new daily attendance records were set, both days saw elevated turnout driven by very strong interest in the live match screenings.

The day on July 4 began in the morning with Canada vs. Morocco, which ended in disappointment for Canada. Just after 10 a.m., the full fan festival footprint across the fairgrounds reached its maximum capacity of 25,000 people. Of those, 10,000 were watching the match inside the amphitheatre, which included the completely full free general-admission standing-only floor with capacity for 2,600 people at any given time, as well as 100 per cent sold-out paid seats, lawn areas, boxes, and suites.

Thousands more watched from elsewhere across the site, including The Park, the fan festival’s second-largest viewing area after the amphitheatre. The fan festival features a total of 10 giant screens for free live match viewing, including three at the amphitheatre and four at The Park.

That was followed later in the day by Paraguay vs. France, which brought another wave of crowds to the site.

Large crowds returned to the fan festival on July 5 for Brazil vs. Norway — driven especially by Brazilian fans — and Mexico vs. England, which drew a particularly strong turnout of Mexican fans.

Daily attendance reached 36,627 on July 4 and 30,239 on July 5.

As previously reported by Daily Hive Urbanized, the highest attendance day to date was Thursday, June 18, when 40,943 people visited the fairgrounds on the same day as BC Place Stadium’s first Canada match against Qatar, which ended in Canada’s historic first-ever FIFA World Cup victory. That day also drew strong attendance due to the Mexico vs. South Korea match.

To date, Vancouver’s fan festival for the FIFA World Cup has operated for a total of 18 days of its 28 operating days within the 39-day tournament period. It has recorded a cumulative attendance of 423,246 so far.

This week’s fan festival opening schedule is different than past weeks, as there will be a rare Tuesday opening. The fan festival is not open today, Monday, July 6, and Wednesday, July 8, but it will be open on Tuesday, July 7 — coinciding with Argentina vs. Egypt in the morning and Vancouver’s hosting of its final FIFA World Cup match at BC Place Stadium in the early afternoon, the round of 16 between Colombia and Switzerland. The fan festival will then reopen on Thursday, July 9, through Sunday, July 12.

Moving forward, with fewer matches now being held during the tournament’s elimination phases, the fan festival’s operating hours on most remaining days will generally be shorter than earlier in the tournament.
