‘Difficult decision’: Fable Diner closing popular Vancouver location

The list of Vancouver restaurant closures continues to grow with the sad news that a popular Fable Diner location will soon close in Mount Pleasant.

The beloved restaurant announced the closure in a press release, stating that it had made the “difficult decision to close its doors,” with the final day of service set for Sunday, Aug. 23.

According to Fable Diner, it was unable to secure a favourable long-term lease or negotiate its ongoing financial obligations in a manner that would allow it to stay open.

“With the delayed completion of the nearby Broadway Subway station and no definite completion date confirmed, the current terms did not allow the business to continue operating sustainably through this period,” explained the establishment.

Fable Diner, which is located at 151 East Broadway on the ground floor of Mount Pleasant’s historic Lee Building, opened in 2016.

Its all-day menu melds breakfast staples, signature diner eats, and modern casual, made of fresh, local ingredients and often with a creative twist.

“We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported Fable Diner over the years — our staff, our regular guests and everyone who has walked through our doors,” said owner Ron MacGillivray in a statement.

“It’s been an incredible journey, and we’re proud of what we’ve built here and the community that has grown around the restaurant.”

Earlier this spring, MacGillivray told Dished about its struggles amid a four-month full closure of Broadway between Main Street and Quebec Street.

The closure was put in place to remove traffic decks for subway construction.

“This closure right now is just crazy, insane,” said MacGillivray when Dished stopped by to chat with him about the effect the Broadway Subway construction has had on his business.

“Once this construction is done, there’s going to be no one left for people to visit.”

Guests are still able to visit the restaurant near Main Street and Broadway until Sunday, Aug. 23.

Fable Kitchen on West 4th Avenue and Fable Diner & Grill on Richards Street will still be in operation to serve guests, and MacGillivray hinted that this may not be the end of the diner’s journey.

“While we don’t have anything confirmed at this time, we’d love to explore the possibility of bringing Fable Diner back in another location or food truck down the road.”
