You may remember Aleph Eatery, the much-loved Middle Eastern restaurant that closed in Vancouver at the start of this year. After its closure, two former members of the Aleph team, Carloses and Pablo, opened a Mexican restaurant in the same space called El Compa with former Aleph owner Haitham El Khatib’s blessing.

However, less than a year after opening the restaurant, El Compa has closed its doors.

“After eight vibrant months, El Compa’s journey has come to an end,” wrote the restaurant on Instagram.

“We opened with passion, poured our hearts into every taco and cocktail, and were met with incredible warmth from our guests,” added El Compa in its closure announcement. “To everyone who dined, celebrated, and supported us, thank you for making El Compa come alive.”

El Compa was known for its variety of Mexican favourites, including tacos, cocktails, and a rotating menu of new offerings.

“We wanted to honour the legacy of Aleph by passing it on to the people who made it special every day. They know what it means to connect with guests and bring something meaningful to the table,” said El Khatib at the time of El Compa’s opening.

As for Aleph, the restaurant initially announced its closure on its seventh anniversary.

“Aleph has been more than a restaurant. It’s been a place of connection, a celebration of flavours, and a shared journey with our community. Now, as we prepare to say goodbye, we invite you to join us in making these final two weeks unforgettable,” wrote Aleph, citing the reason for the closure being debts from the pandemic that it couldn’t recover from despite its best efforts.
