The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is sharing some details about a scary situation that took place in East Vancouver involving a home invasion and a hostage situation that ended with a fatal shooting.

According to the VPD, the incident took place on Monday at around 9 p.m. on the 3600 block of Commercial Street.

VPD said that police officers were responding to reports of a violent home invasion.

“Police arrived on scene to find a violent incident underway with the suspect having gained entry to a residence and holding a man hostage.”

After an attempt by officers to de-escalate the situation, VPD said that the officers were “ultimately forced to shoot the suspect.”

That suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said that the hostage was also injured and taken to the hospital for medical attention. The hostage has since been released.

VPD also shared that none of the officers involved in the incident were injured.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) was called to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.

Many were celebrating the work of police officers in response to a post shared by the VPD on X.

The IIO has shared additional details about the fatal Vancouver shooting, including stating that officers responded to reports of a male running through people’s backyards. The IIO investigation will examine all available evidence to determine what occurred.

“At the conclusion of the investigation, the chief civilian director will consider whether there are reasonable grounds to believe that an offence may have occurred,” the IIO adds.
