BYOT: East Vancouver corner café responds after table is stolen

Le Marché St. George is a cute little café that sits on the corner of St. George in East Vancouver, and while it was closed for Truth and Reconciliation Day, someone decided to steal one of its outdoor tables.

Today, the café and general store shared a post about the incident, asking the perpetrator to bring their table back.

It has also garnered quite a response from the community, with many wondering why someone would do such a thing.

“Stealing from a small business is like stealing from an individual. We go out of our way to source things from this space so everyone can enjoy it,” Le Marché said in an Instagram post.

The post also suggested that today was “B.Y.O.T.” or bring your own table day “if you need to.”

“Today we will have one less table in an already small space. This doesn’t just bum us out because something was stolen; it also hinders our ability to serve customers better.”

The community rallied behind the café in the comments.

One follower said, “Who steals from a small business!? Yuck. Our neighborhood is better than this.”

Another follower said, “It’s just not cool to steal.”

Luminous Studios, a community studio and art space, said they’ve experienced this kind of theft, too.

The East Vancouver café is a beloved community hub that also sometimes serves as an event space. If you were just cycling or driving by on your bike, you might mistake it as just a random residence, but it’s much more than that.

A blurb on the website says it all, reading, “It’s honest people who work long hours. It’s a funky, handsome, all-crooked, old building where all of this is happening.”
