E-scooter spotted cruising down Highway 1 in Metro Vancouver

Metro Vancouver has no shortage of strange driving occurrences — and sometimes, those weird moments happen on highways too.

A Daily Hive reader spotted something unusual travelling westbound on Highway 1 on Saturday, just before the Kensington exit in Burnaby.

The passenger in the vehicle noticed an individual riding an e-scooter, cruising along the highway shoulder.

According to ICBC, “electric kick scooters may only be operated on designated roads in participating communities of B.C.’s electric kick scooter pilot project.”

The provincial government provides more information about this pilot, noting that individuals do not need a licence or insurance to operate an electric kick scooter in communities participating in the program. Drivers must also abide by the rules in the Electric Kick Scooter Pilot Project Regulation guide.

In Greater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, drivers are permitted to ride their e-scooters in the following municipalities participating in the program:

  • Chilliwack
  • Coquitlam
  • North Vancouver
  • Port Moody
  • Richmond
  • Vancouver
  • District of North Vancouver
  • District of Squamish
  • District of West Vancouver
  • Township of Langley

The City of Burnaby is not included in the pilot.

“A person must not operate an electric kick scooter on a highway except on a pilot project highway in accordance with this regulation,” reads the regulation guide.

For participating municipalities, travelling on an e-scooter on roads with a speed limit above 50 km/h is only allowed on designated bike lanes. Legal e-scooters have a max speed limited to 25 km/h.

This isn’t the first time an e-scooter driver has been spotted driving on the highway.

Last summer, a driver captured shocking dashcam video showing a man riding an e-scooter in the left lane of Highway 1.

Daily Hive has reached out to BC Highway Patrol for further comment and will update this piece when we hear back.
