Details emerge about rejected trade offer for Vancouver Canucks' Kiefer Sherwood

Has Kiefer Sherwood played his last game for the Vancouver Canucks?

On Monday, Canucks head coach Adam Foote said that Sherwood would miss about 1-3 weeks due to injury.

If his absence is closer to that three-week mark, that takes the Canucks right up to the Olympic roster freeze.

Teams may be eager to get some business done before then. Once the roster freeze is lifted on Feb. 22, less than two weeks remain until the NHL trade deadline on March 6.

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen reported that as many as 20 teams are interested in acquiring Sherwood from the Canucks. On top of that, NHL Insider Chris Johnston revealed that the Canucks have received legitimate offers for Sherwood, which they subsequently turned down.

ā€œI know they have received offers of a second-round pick and a pretty good prospect for him, and didn’t take it,” Johnston said on The Chris Johnston Show. “So, that tells you where the offer has to go to get it done.”

“I mean, it’s probably a first-round pick and a prospect or something like that. Now, probably, as always, these things depend on the prospect.ā€

This isn’t the first time a reported trade offer for Sherwood has leaked out. Back in December, Michael Russo of The Athletic reported that the Canucks turned down a trade of Liam Ɩhgren for Sherwood. Ironically, Ɩhgren later became a Canuck in the deal that saw Hughes go to Minnesota.

Sherwood’s name has been on the market for almost a month and a half now, yet he remains with the organization.

It appears as though no one currently wants to offer a first-round pick for Sherwood, but perhaps that could change if the Canucks allow other teams to negotiate an extension with Vancouver’s leading goal-scorer.

Thomas Drance of The Athletic reported on Monday that the Canucks haven’t allowed other teams to talk contract extension with Sherwood, at least not yet.

If the Canucks are still targeting a first-rounder, the most sensible targets would be teams in the playoff race who hold multiple first-round picks. Here are the four teams that fit the criteria.

  • Boston Bruins
  • San Jose Sharks
  • Seattle Kraken
  • New York Islanders

Or, perhaps the Canucks lower their asking price, or find the right player that they like to make the proposed deal of a prospect and a second-round pick work.

The San Jose Sharks, who reportedly entered the Sherwood sweepstakes last week, are a team with a plethora of prospects to potentially make a deal work. Could they part with Filip Bystedt, a 6-foot-2 centre who was drafted 27th overall in 2022? How about Kasper Halttunen, a big winger who was taken with the 36th selection in 2023?

Regardless, with Sherwood’s injury and the Olympic roster freeze upcoming, the Canucks are beginning to reach a pressure point with a potential Sherwood trade.
