It’s been a season to forget for the Vancouver Canucks.
Any hopes of them getting back on track in 2025-26 have been long forgotten, as they sit dead last in NHL standings. Based on several injuries they’re dealing with, they may not be climbing out of the basement anytime soon.
Head coach Adam Foote spoke with the media on Monday and had some bad news regarding three injured Canucks.
The first began with Thatcher Demko, who was shifted to the injured reserve on Sunday with a lower-body ailment. Foote told reporters that the 30-year-old, who has struggled once again to stay healthy in 2025-26, may wind up being shut down for the remainder of the season.
As if that weren’t bad enough, Foote also informed reporters that Kiefer Sherwood, a potential trade candidate heading into the March 6 deadline, could miss anywhere from a week to three weeks with an undisclosed injury.
Last, but not least, is newly acquired forward Marco Rossi, who hasn’t played since suffering an injury on Dec. 30 in a game versus the Philadelphia Flyers. According to Foote, he could still be out of the lineup for another two-to-three weeks before making his return.
As if all this weren’t bad enough, Zeev Buium, who was the big piece acquired in the Quinn Hughes trade, will sit out tonight’s game versus the Montreal Canadiens. This one isn’t injury-related, however, as the 20-year-old is instead sitting out as a healthy scratch.
It’s hard to fathom just how much of a disaster this season has been for the Canucks, and there seems to be no end in sight. The best-case scenario for this organization appears to be finishing near the bottom of the NHL standings in hopes of potentially landing the first-overall pick at the 2026 draft.
