Metro Vancouver highway closed after overpass strike causes 'visible damage'

Drivers on a major B.C. highway ran into major delays on Wednesday when an overpass strike occurred in Delta, shutting down the roadway.
According to the BC Highway Patrol, a Kenworth tractor-trailer unit heading southbound on Highway 99 struck the Ladner Trunk Road overpass.
The incident was reported shortly after 10:30 a.m., and when officers arrived on scene, there was visible damage, which forced the closure of both southbound lanes on Highway 99 plus the overpass.
Police are looking for witnesses and dash cam video while crews work at the scene of the incident to reopen the highway.

“We’re working with the BC Ministry of Transportation to ensure that the overpass is safe, and we’re asking drivers to avoid the area because delays will be significant,” said Sgt. Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol.
“If you are a witness, and particularly if you have dash-camera video of the events leading up to the collision, please call police.”
BC Highway Patrol added that the driver of the white Kenworth tractor-trailer did stop at the scene after the collision.
Police are also working with Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) to try and determine the exact cause of the overpass strike.

This is the second major incident that disrupted commutes on Wednesday.
Major service disruptions on SkyTrain’s Millennium Line ended at about 11:20 a.m. following a serious fire early this morning at Gilmore Station in Burnaby’s Brentwood district.

Shortly before 5 a.m., Burnaby fire crews responded to a blaze directly below the station. A seating structure wrapped around one of the elevated guideway’s concrete support columns had caught fire, engulfing the column in intense flames.
Millennium Line service was significantly disrupted throughout the morning, with no trains running between Brentwood Town Centre and Renfrew stations. TransLink deployed more than 20 buses to provide a replacement shuttle service connecting Brentwood Town Centre, Gilmore, Rupert, and Renfrew stations.
