SkyTrain service resumes after fire exposes rebar in Gilmore Station's concrete column

Major service disruptions on SkyTrain’s Millennium Line ended at about 11:20 a.m. following a serious fire early this morning at Gilmore Station in Burnaby’s Brentwood district.

Shortly before 5 a.m., Burnaby fire crews responded to a blaze directly below the station. A seating structure wrapped around one of the elevated guideway’s concrete support columns had caught fire, engulfing the column in intense flames.
TransLink and local fire officials have not yet publicly stated the cause of the incident.
Millennium Line service was significantly disrupted throughout the morning, with no trains running between Brentwood Town Centre and Renfrew stations. TransLink deployed more than 20 buses to provide a replacement shuttle service connecting Brentwood Town Centre, Gilmore, Rupert, and Renfrew stations.

Fire damage was clearly visible at the east end of the station, where sections of the concrete column’s outer layer had broken off, exposing rebar and leaving substantial concrete debris on the ground. This type of damage, known as concrete spalling, can occur when concrete is exposed to extreme heat.
There also appeared to be some damage to electrical wiring and the station platform’s roof. An electrical unit serving the station is located at the end of the platform, directly above where the fire occurred.
SkyTrain crews have since given the all-clear after performing a thorough investigation of the condition of the infrastructure and completing any initial critical repairs, allowing train service to resume and the station to reopen.

In 2025, several wrap-around seating structures were installed around the columns beneath the station, as part of Onni Group’s public realm design for the Gilmore Place project’s linear public plaza beneath the station and elevated guideway.
Based on the original project agreement, the developer is expected to provide Gilmore Station with some further improvements, particularly the construction of a new permanent roof over the station platforms — replacing the existing slender canopies built in the early 2000s, which were intended to be temporary to enable the flexibility of integrating a future development with the station.
Before the end of 2026, the T&T Supermarket grocery store and Fitness World are expected to open at Gilmore Place.
